The Big Idea in Instructional Design:

People brazen enough to work in the trenches of the classroom are inherently creative.

To determine the central theme or big idea for a course, I find it helpful to consider one of those faculty gatherings where each faculty from a different field tries to justify why their department or field of study is more important than another department or field of study.  Why is your subject important and why will the life of the student be forever changed after participating in your course?
